We start our hike in Melinda, on the south coast of Lesvos. We walk through old olive groves – in spring and early summer full of flowers – and ascend slowly through the lovely valley. After crossing the stream, our path takes us steeply uphill to the mountain village of Kournela. While we climb up our way offers us several breathtaking views to the coast, the village of Melinda and the settlement of Paleochori on the opposite side of the valley. There are not many residents living in the old village of Kournela; due to its remote location with no drivable connection to the coast it is very quiet here. If we are lucky, we can get a coffee or refreshment in the local bar. After a break and a good look around - you may find some appealing views or close up subjects for your photos – we descend, until we reach the riverbed. Our path leads us along ruins of ancient buildings, an old mill and an interesting well. Down in the valley we can enjoy the fauna and flora around us, until we reach our starting point, Melinda.
You will probably be ready for a refreshing bathe in the clear water and a little rest on the sunbeds. Feeling hungry, we sit down in one of the fish tavernas at the beach and enjoy a tasty meal on the terrace, overlooking the sea. Maybe a glass of ouzo or chilled white wine will finish our day.
