Our hike begins at the inland village of Eressos, in the west of Lesvos. We leave the village on a track and climb rather steeply uphill to the crest of Aspros Vrachas. From above we enjoy stunning views to the dam and across the lake to the monastery of Pithario, the Kambos area of small farms leading to Skala Eressou and the sea. We walk slowly downhill to the picturesque water reservoir that provides the dry region around Eressos water for the farmers. The monastery sits picturesquely over the reservoir – if we are lucky we will find a monk that will open the gate for us. Anyway, we will have a pleasant break at the monastery enjoying the peace and calm. We return to Eressos along the track.
Back at the starting point we drive a few minutes by car to Skala Eressou, where we sit down in one of the beach tavernas and enjoy a late lunch. By then we will definitely be ready for a swim or a little rest on the long, sandy beach.
