The meeting point for our tour is the great bridge close to Kalloni. We start the hike walking on an ancient cobbled track through the hilly countryside to the women’s monastery Myrsiniotissas. This beautiful monastery with its secluded courtyard ran a secret school during the Turkish occupation. Unfortunately, the monastery is not always open – if we are lucky, we can go inside and see it. Our hike continues on the old pilgrims’ route to the Moni Limonos. This monastery of friars was already built before the Turkish occupation. It was often destroyed and rebuilt; the current building dating back to 1527. Moni Limonos is probably the most interesting monastery in Lesvos – we take some time to look around this splendid building. We continue our hike, with stunning views of the bay of Kalloni through picturesque lava stone formations to the approximately 500 year old monastery Metochi, which is now used as a seminar center of a Norwegian university.
We head towards Kalloni, always with scenic views of the bay and to the mountains on the other side of the Gulf. We reach the small village of Dafia, where we can stop for a meal and drinks before we walk back to the starting point.
