We begin this scenic hike in Vrisa, at the plateia of the traditional little village. From there we head down on old trails through pine forests and olive groves to the long, sandy beach of Vatera. Throughout the trek down there are superb views to the sea and the islands at the horizon. During the spring and summer the fragrance of the aromatic herbs and flowers growing all around is inescapable.
Arriving at Vatera beach, we relax with a long sunbathe on a sunbed and a swim in the clear blue sea. The cook at one of our favourite tavernas at the beach prepares a tasty, light lunch for us. Feeling stronger after an appetizing meal we slowly make our way along the beach until we come to the river Almiropotamos. It is a good place for bird watchers as many species live and nest here. Also turtles can be found at the river mouth - on some days we counted more than 60 turtles at one spot.
On the way back to Vrisa we pass an old defence tower “Pirgos”, from which the residents in times past were warned of approaching pirates.
Back in Vrisa we sit down in one of the kafeneia at the central plateia and enjoy a coffee or other refreshment.
The little Natural History Museum at Vrisa, houses an interesting collection of fossils, rocks, stuffed birds and animals, with displays explaining the local prehistory and a model of a giant prehistoric tortoise. Depending on the opening hours we can visit the museum before we start our hike or at the end of the day.
