We start our tour with a visit of the village of Agia Pareskevi, a charming mountain village in the hills above sea level. The village has long been considered one of the richest in Greece - mainly through agriculture and cattle-breeding. It looks like those postcard images of old Greeks sitting around with their coffee or ouzo, discussing the history of the world or politics and playing Tavli. We stop at the edge of the village, where an impressive olive oil museum in a former olive oil factory from the 19th century was first opened in 2006. The building itself is an impressive industrial monument, but also the functional machinery and well explained exhibits are worth seeing.
We continue to the medieval bridge of Kremasti and the early Christian temple of Chalinados. On our way to the east coast we may see the wild horses of Mandamados. At Bounty Beach, a natural beach with white sand you may have a swim in the clear water.
We reach the monastery of Taxiarchis in Mantamados, an important place of pilgrimage for orthodox Christians. We visit the church with the beautiful icons and its beautiful courtyard. You should not leave the monastery before you tried the traditional sweets served in the local café: Loukoumades (small pastry with honey and nuts).
At the Gulf of Kalloni we enter the saltpans to see the flamingos and other birds.
